Director John Harrison spoke about not adding anything in his production of Frank Herbert's DUNE, which cannot be sourced to the novel. In this regard he viewed his job in much the same way Peter Jackson did when it came to Lord of the Rings. That is, serve the text, and author, not one's own personal agenda.
Though it is in essence a stage play and often feels that way - History is likely to demonstrate the Sci-Fi Channel's (Syfy) adaption to be most well meaning and faithful to Frank Herbert's masterpiece.
