Movies I Like: Jupiter Ascending

A guilty pleasure, with surprising interesting amount of worldbuilding.

Jupiter Ascending, is a guilty pleasure. I surprisingly like this movie a great deal. Its visually interesting, and attempts to give an epic, wide ranging modern space opera building a new mythic landscape, that had things gone better for it, we might have revisited every few years.

I'll put it like this, Jupiter Ascending, is more thematically, and narrative-ly consistent, than The Last Jedi and a whole lot more fun as well while gives us a  heroine worth caring about - Jupiter Jones, who is not a MarySue.

Mila Kunis, as Jupiter Jones, our heroine is plucky and assertive without becoming simply a hero with boobs. Channing Tatum, as Caine Wise provides us with a brooding yet likable counterpoint, which for me works really nicely.

Oh right. I love the naming conventions here, when it comes to the 'aliens' personal names. Nice plays on words.

Speaking of the aliens, I like the fact that they are not really alien at all, and apparently share connections to Earth and humanity. Not only does this explain all the humanoid body types and makes forehead bumps make sense, I think that such connections helps ground this new world.

Overall for me, this is a contemporary Flash Gordon, I mean both the 80s movie, and the old serials. This movie makes me feel good when I watch it, something I can't say about too many modern pieces of entertainment, or current Science Fiction which is in a sad state of affairs.

Too bad we will never get another peek into Jupiter Ascending's bureaucratic universe. It might have been fun.
